Biotelemetry

Throughout my research I have deployed animal tracking devices on wild animals. I am hence experienced in various attachment methods and the requirements for successful tag attachment, for example cleaning and preparing the site for attachment.

I have developed and built my own bespoke devices tracking devices including using remote release systems (galvanic timed releases, GTRs). Through having built my own equipment I have developed skills in soldering, building floatation devices, 3D tag design, and the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study tag impact.

I am competent with biologging device functioning, including programming and calibration, data download, processing (including time and date offsets and filtering), and data cleaning.

In having deployed numerous biologging devices I have become well versed in preparing the equipment, such as tag testing, tag priming, and SD card programming.

I have experience with the following equipment:

  • Daily Dairies
  • Fastloc-GPS Devices
  • Time-Depth Recorders (TDRs)
  • Pressure Transducers
  • Very High Frequency (VHF) Radio Transmitters
  • Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio Transmitters
  • ARGOS Satellite Transmitters
  • Galvanic-Timed Releases (GTRs)
